For over four decades, John Lopez has been proud to call Grand Prairie home. After graduating from South Grand Prairie High School, he earned his degrees from Mountain View College and the University of Texas at Arlington. Starting from a young age, he has dedicated countless hours to his community, and advocated for initiatives that have improved the quality of life for every one.
Councilman Lopez has been honored to serve on the City Council since first being elected in 2019, and was selected by his colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro Tem from 2023 to 2024. Prior to his elected service, John has served on numerous city commissions and strongly supported community organizations:
John has supported upgrading the standards of our community amenities, including parks, recreation centers, and entertainment areas. John believes that city government should always be proactively raising the profile of Grand Prairie being the best place to live, work, and visit. As a result, WalletHub.com recognized Grand Prairie as the Fourth Happiest City in Texas.
According to FBI Statistics, Grand Prairie ranked as the FOURTH Safest Major City in Texas in 2024, skyrocketing from 8th place in 2023. John is proud of the work by our city's first responders, and understands that public safety is a commitment that can never be compromised. On Council, he has supported improved pay scales, better equipment, and mental wellness programs for department employees.
John is a strong advocate for infrastructure improvements that keep Grand Prairie's roads and sidewalks safe and well-maintained. He willingly collaborates with county, state and national leaders to bring in new resources that enhance our transportation abilities. Additionally, John actively supports the city's Via Grand Prairie transportation service, including discounted rates for students traveling to college.
John has a strong track record of supporting the strength and vibrancy of our local economy. On Council, he's favored strategic city investments that have blossomed into major economic epicenters, producing access to good-paying jobs and high-quality careers. John successfully advocated for increasing participation in the city's Small Business Expo by including bilingual programs and resources for local entrepreneurs.
